darksigns on "variable in url at register page"

hi

I would like to keep a variable in the wp-register.php
like this:
http://www.mydomain/wp-login.php?action=register&variable=1

But if username is already exist then the page refreshes itself and the variable disapears.
any suggestion to solve it?
